This is the horrific story of how my 88 year-old Grandma (Mary Stenlund) and the rest of our family, became victims of the Iowa Department of Human Services.  The DHS has forced my grandma into a nursing home against her will (where she has displayed suspicious bruises), separated her from her family through the use of injunctions, is in the process of taking all but $30 of her monthly pension money to help pay for her imprisonment, and now has her in complete “lock down” while attempting to criminalize her daughter and grandson. 

Not once, has the DHS, hospital staff, or even the Judge (Ruth Klotz who should have retired years ago) asked my Grandmother what she wants.  Rather, the DHS has operated under the assumption that my grandmother is unable to consent to these “protective” services that they have deemed necessary.  Furthermore, they have ignored the fact that there is a power of attorney in place (both general and durable) which grants my mother the authority to handle my grandma’s affairs.  I have learned that whenever the DHS goes after someone with a warrant or one of their so-called “protective” orders, they go to the probate judge who by all accounts, always signs what they present. Of course, keep in mind that the DHS tends to distort the truth, and in our case they blatantly lie!. Maintaining a steady stream of so-called "abused" or "neglected" individuals, keeps the DHS in business. There is an huge bureaucracy in place which handles all of these cases. If there are no "victims", there are no jobs for these bureaucrats! And, let's not forget that there has been an obscene amount of federal, and state grant money used for the study of, and implementation of programs for, elder abuse/neglect cases...In other words, they have to be able to justify where this money went!!! I don't see how it's possible to trust anything the DHS says, or does!!! In fact, I believe that the department should be broken up into many smaller departments...With particular emphasis on assuring that the DHS protective services, can never again hurt individuals or whole families like they have, and continue to do.
